In 1912, Louis Berger established a bespoke tailoring business in Stockport, Cheshire. Soon after, he imported from Chicago one of the very first 'Hoffman' steam scissor-presses.

This enabled Louis to finish garments10 times faster and to a much higher quality than using the traditional very heavy and cumbersome cast-iron, fire-heated 'goose' irons, applied over a wet cloth. (This is where the now much misused and almost obsolete term 'hand-pressing' originated).

He then took on a dry cleaning & dyeing agency, but Hoffman pressed every item himself. (Even today Harry Berger's still use Hoffman presses as there is still no better method of finishing garment to the highest tailoring standard).

In 1928 and by then managed by Louis's son Harry, the business moved a few miles away to its present site in Cheadle Hulme where Harry added mens' and boys' wear retailing to the dry cleaning & dyeing service.

After W.W.2. the demand for his dry cleaning service and skilled pressing gradually overtook the retailing, so after a thorough grounding in dry cleaning followed by extensive training, in 1952 he built a small works at the back of his retail premises and bought one of the very first, new generation dry cleaning machines and installed four new hoffman presses!

The business continued to expand and by 1968 Harry’s eldest son Malcolm, (now technical director) had joined, followed a few years later by his younger brother Stephen (now marketing director). A few years ago Louis's great-grandson Jonathan Berger joined the business as I.T. manager.

           As well as enjoying an unbeatable reputation for their extensive textile knowledge and technical expertise the Berger brothers are rated by their peers in the industry as one of the three, very best dry cleaners & dyers (out of approx. 3.500 similar businesses in the UK). This is due in no small measure to Malcolm, Stephen & Jonathan being fully involved in maintaining the highest of standards whilst providing expert advice and a unbeatable level of service their customers have come to expect.
