Although we have long been regarded by many generations of customers and our peers in the industry as one of the finest dry cleaners & dyers in the country (out of 3,700 similar businesses) we can now claim to be probably THE VERY BEST, as a result of a secret survey of both multiple and independent dry cleaners across the UK, commisioned by a well known national consumer subscription magazine (but we can't say which!). A Brief History. In 1912 (as young man) Louis Berger established a bespoke tailoring business in Stockport, Cheshire. Soon afterwards he imported from Chicago, USA one of the first and then revolutionary, 'Hoffman' steam-powered garment scissor-presses in the area.

This steam press enabled him to finish his newly-made garments faster, more safely and to a higher quality than with the traditional very heavy cast-iron fire-heated 'goose' irons, applied over a wet cloth. (This is where the now much misused and misappropriated tailoring term 'hand-pressing' originated which nowadays more accurately describes ordinary ironing as 'hand finishing' which although useful for silks and other fine fabrics, is inferior to hoffman pressing on virtually every other material). Even today, Harry Berger's still use Hoffman presses (and irons of course where required) as there is still no better method of finishing most garments to the highest tailoring standards.

In 1928 one of Louis's sons Harry, (who also trained as a bespoke tailor), opened a tailoring & menswear shop a few miles away at its present site in Cheadle Hulme. After W.W.2. he gradually wound down the retailing side and 1952 installed a state-of-the-art dry cleaning machine (and four hoffman presses!)

The dry cleaning flourished and a dyeing service was added in 1970 when Harry’s eldest son Malcolm, (now technical director) joined the business, followed a few years later by his younger brother Stephen (now marketing director). In 2005 Louis's great-grandson Jonathan joined the business as I.T. consultant.
